Review: The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey

Happy Sunday! Or happy Easter! Or happy Passover! Or happy whatever religious or non-religious holiday you may celebrate! I’m not very religious myself, but quite open-minded πŸ™‚ I respect all beliefs!

The good news! It’s review time again! *holds for applause*

Yesterday I finished reading The 5th Wave. And let me tell you, it was awesome. Somehow, this book had totally escaped my book radar all this time. I hadn’t even heard of it until I was at Barnes and Noble a couple weeks ago, and saw it in its own display becasue it is being made into a movie. By the way, the movie is set to be released January 29th, 2016. And man, am I excited πŸ˜‰

But, back to the book! This entire story was so interesting. There wasn’t a single point in all 457 pages that I was bored. From the first chapter, I was pulled completely into Cassie’s world. I found myself questioning a few of her actions at the beginning, but as the book went on, I came to understand her motivation. And found myself wondering how I would act in the same situations. This book certainly gave me some food for thought. It also gave me some trust issues πŸ˜‰ Which you’ll understand more of once you get to the end.

The ultimate question: what is the 5th wave?

The good: I love the writing style! Switching between points of view, especially all in first-person, can come off as confusing. However, the author did such an amazing job separating Cassie’s POV from Zombie’s, and gave us very interesting opposite perspectives. The plot took a lot of twists and turns, some of which I guessed and some I didn’t see coming. But even the twists I guessed correctly didn’t feel obvious or overdone. The entire story still felt fresh, even after a long row if dystopian novels I’ve read before this one. I was worried that the alien angle would feel old, but I was so wrong. I loved how they were written. The mystery and intelligence that the author gave our villains was refreshing and actually made me love to hate them even more. I also loved the mind-bending emotions I felt while reading! I would read something, and feel pretty confident in it, until another situation came along, and I would start second-guessing myself. Overall, this is one of the best dystopian novels I’ve read in a long time, and may have just jumped to the #1 spot on my list. I cannot wait to get my hands on The Infinite Sea! Oh! The ending! Bittersweet, with just enough conclusions that it wasn’t an awful cliffhanger, but not not enough that I could get by never reading the squeals. The perfect kind of ending, in my opinion πŸ™‚

The just okay: Okay, maybe I’m still running on the emotional buzzing of this action-packed adventure, but I can’t really think of any negatives! I could see how some people who don’t like that buzz of adrenaline wouldn’t love this novel. However, I love that feeling. So, I guess the negative is I don’t have the second installment yet πŸ˜‰ But that’s not the authors problem.

I’m giving this book 5+ stars! It’s an amazing ride of action, plot twisty sci-fi, intrigue, and romance. The characters are

realistic enough that I cheered on their triumphs, worried for their well-being, and cried for their heartaches. Check out this book asap! Its a book that deserves a Harry Potter/Hunger Games-type fandom!

Thanks for reading, loves! You are all amazing! Follow me for more reviews coming soon! I’ve got a couple ARC waiting for me πŸ™‚
