Tuesday Tidbit: E-Readers

Hello!

Okay, I know it’s not technically Tuesday. But I was thinking about this post yesterday (when it was Tuesday!) and I just didn’t have time to post in then. So, next best thing 😉

I was in Best Buy (which is an electronic store, for those who don’t have them around) because my mom was shopping for a new printer. And since I was not that invested in her printer selection, I decided to browse the store a bit. I did the usually things like listening to all the demo speakers, trying on all the Beats headphones, browsing the CD selection and wondering who still buys CDs, and then I found myself in front of the Kindles. And they were so pretty! I’ve actually been really interested in buying a kindle for awhile now. I just read on my phone Kindle app mostly. I’m always checking Amazon.com and looking at the different types. So, after being at war with myself for 15 minutes and justifying the purchase (it would be so much easier to read outside because no glare, it would save my phone battery, I could read ARCs so much faster!) I decided to buy a Kindle Paperwhite.

 

 

 

 

I know a lot of people have strong feelings about e-readers. Some people live and die by them, while others prefer that they would just die. But I feel like I’m just about in the middle argument. I think e-readers definitely have a place in bookish culture. They are literally a library in your handbag (or back pocket, I won’t discriminate against your carrying choices)! And that can’t be all bad. You can also buy books at a discount in a lot of cases. Which is awesome. There are also programs like the one Amazon has called Kindle Unlimited. For this program you can pay $10 a month and have access to all the books marked Unlimited in the kindle store. Which is pretty damn awesome. Of course not all the newest/most popular/magicalest books are available. Because maybe those authors want you to pay more for their book. But there are still a lot of amazing books out there that aren’t mega popular. Some of my all-time favorite books are by indie authors.

I also understand the other side of the argument, by the people who detest e-readers. A lot of people are worried about electronic books overtaking the market and driving libraries/bookstores out of business. I’m not too worried about that though. Because of us. The die-hard book dragons who won’t stop buying books no matter what. I believe in us, guys! Even though I really enjoy e-readers and the convenience of them, they’d never replace physical books in my heart or on my shelf. When I find a book I adore electronically (I discovered The Lunar Chronicles, The Selection, and The Raven Cycle in Kindle sales!) I will buy it in physical form as well. Because my shelf basically demands it. 😉

So, now that I’ve babbled on for awhile and told you my thoughts, I’d love if you would share your thoughts with me! Are you an e-reader cheerleader or an electronic shamer? Either way, this is a safe place to vent your feelings. 🤓 No judgement here!

  1. I personally love my Kindle. I went with the Kindle Fire HD 7 inch, which I am not sure they even make anymore. I looked at the Paperwhite, but didn’t care for the jarring page turns with the paperwhite. But, Kindle is a fantastic eReader. Best one I have ever owned. I had a Nook Color and an iPad Mini before I got the Kindle. Neither held up very well.

    I still read physical books, of course, but the Kindle is just so easy to use and easy to carry around. There is room for both in my library. 😀

    1. There is definitely room for both in my life too! 🙂 That’s really good to hear about the kindle! I thought about getting a Nook in the past, but I held back because a friend of mine has one and hers is always switch on and off or having weird screen balance issues. Hopefully my kindle doesn’t have those problems! Plus, I love Amazon. They are pretty helpful when things you buy go wrong. I’m guessing they’ll be helpful if something they actually made goes haywire too 😉

      1. Amazon has fantastic customer service. You made the right choice. 😀 Plus, I am pretty sure they are gradually phasing the Nook out. It’s losing features which makes it look like maybe they are going to stop supporting it. :/

      3. I suppose we will have to see. They haven’t made any public announcements about not supporting the Nook entirely, just certain services. Also their sales are down. Maybe that will change.

  2. I love paper books, but I love my kindle too. It’s so useful and contains so many books. Plus I simply don’t have the option to buy all the books on paper and some are only in electronic format.
    And I hate reading on LCD screen, so phones and tablets are out of option 😉

    1. Same for me! I don’t have the space or money to buy every book I’ve ever wanted to read in physical format. So sometimes reading them on a kindle is just so much easier and more convenient! And I definitely see what you mean about LCDs now that I have the Paperwhite 😉 It’s so much easier on my eyes! Especially if I’m reading at night before bed.

  4. Sorry I hit send before I meant to! Haha. The paperwhite is so much easier on my eyes than my phone. I like how it syncs with goodreads and you can find a lot of good books for free with the Kindle or at a decent price. I still buy the traditional books for the books that I LOVE and will read multiple times.

    1. Yes, I love the goodreads sync too! When I bought it I didn’t realize it had that feature! It’s so useful! And also just really fun to use 😉 And I’ve only had mine a couple days, but the ereader does seem so much easier on my eyes than my phone! Which is really awesome, since I usually like to read my kindle before bed. Physical books with always have a special place in my life, but sometimes I think reading is reading no matter the format, and that’s the important thing 🙂

  5. Loved this post!! I use to be a big Nook reader before I transitioned to buying physical copies of books but after a few years, I noticed that I still like the convenience of reading on an e-reader and I wasn’t satisfied with my Nook anymore. So in May I bought myself the same Kindle Paperwhite you have and ugh I love it!!!! There are certain genres I like to read only on my kindle (ex: New Adult) because for some reason the books are just way cheaper than the paperback. I mean $1.99-$2.99 on Kindle versus $15 for a paperback. Also, the huge big books are just easier for me to read on my Kindle when I’m going to work or traveling. I live in NYC so I take the bus and the train, juggling a book thats like 450+ pages is A LOT. I also love the Goodread Deals that Kindle offers. If I had to choose a side, I would say that I’m on #TeamReading. It doesn’t matter what platform a person prefers to their reading, as long as their reading I think that’s all that counts.

    1. Loved this comment!! I 100% agree with you! I’m definitely team reading as well. I feel like reading is reading, so if you can find a book you love and get enjoyment out of using your imagination, then that’s awesome! And sometimes, an ereader is just 100x more convenient. Traveling like you said for sure! I also like reading mine before bed, cause no book light is required. Reading it while I’m getting reading in the morning and don’t have a hand to hold a book open. Sometimes I feel like I can actually read faster on an electronic format vs a physical book. So that’s nice too. Plus, yeah, $3 for an ebook when I’d have to spend $10 plus shipping for a physical? Sometimes I just can’t 😉

  6. I love my Kindle, but I cherish physical books. I got my Kindle originally because I wanted to read Outlander but didn’t have the space to house such a large series on my shelves, it saves me so much space! I also LOVE the sales you can find sometimes. Oddly enough I still haven’t read Outlander yet :P!

    1. That’s actually a really good reason! I was actually planning to read Game of Thrones on my kindle app awhile balc for the same reason. But my boyfriend has the series in physical, and then he moved in. So I have them now. But I still haven’t read them either. 😂 I need to read Outlander too!

      1. 😂 those two series are so huge.. it’s ridiculous how thick the books are. I’m on book 3 of Game of Thrones.. should really get on that I bet my friend wants his books back haha

      10. That’s what they say! That the books are a lot better! My mom read the first three, but her issue was the main characters kept running from the same problem without a lot of resolution. So it got kind of repetitive. And my mom likes a happy ending 😂 So I don’t know.

      11. ☺️ aww.. that does get a bit repetitive and tedious. Some resolution is always nice, but I’m starting to find happy endings overrated in books haha give me a twisted ending!

  7. I have had my Kindle for two years and I love it! I also visit the library often for physical books as well as digital books that deliver right to my Kindle – how cool is that?! I did have three versions of the Nook but the Kindle is just superior. Amazon makes it so easy. My Kindle is like a security blanket and I don’t go anywhere without it! I am sure you will love yours as much as I do! Happy reading 😊📚❤️

    1. I’ve heard that you can set up your kindle with a library and get books! Which is awesome! 😃 Amazon does make it so easy. My friend has a Nook but she’s struggled with screen issues and some other problems. I also live in the state Amazon originated in, so I’m bred to love it 😂
